June 28, 1999 Tokara - One Day Off -
At 9:42 AM Kohno spoke with the Expedition Office, "We are taking a day off. We will meet with the people who live in Tokara now. The Island Tokara is a legendary place where pirates hid their treasure. (The Japanese name "Takara-Jima" means "Treasure Island".)
We visited the limestone caves. Everybody cheered us on then so very wonderfully. We'd like to stop at each island and communicate with the representatives of each island."

Reviewing yesterday's activities, Kohno also said "We left Ohhama in the dark. The only light we had was that we carried on our heads. We saw Tokara almost at the half away point. We could see it, but couldn't reach it nearly as easily."
The area Kohno's was passing through, it known to be bad coverage and signal for the cellular phones. They were lucky transmit this report yesterday, because the conversation was cut out again and again.
