July 16, 1999 Started out from Tanega, arrived at Hetsuka, Kagoshima.
Kohno phoned the Expedition Office at 6:39 AM, "We are leaving Yokino, Tanega at 6:45 then onward to Cape Ohsumi. It's cloudy with a western wind blowing. Maybe we will arrive at around 1700 or 1800." It is the final voyage in the 2nd stage.
At about 1700, Kohno phoned the Expedition Office, "We've arrived at Hetsuka." This is one of the places along the eastern rim of the Ohsumi Peninsula, Kagoshima prefecture. At Hetsuka, their cellular phone does not work so he walked to a public phone to log his report.
Tomorrow they will start toward Uchinoura, then to Kushima, the day after tomorrow as planned.
