June 26, 1999 The night before 2nd stage's start.
Official information at 9:00 PM
They will leave Ohhama, Amami-Ohshima at 4:00 AM on June 27. They are scheduled to arrive at Tokara at 8:00 PM. As an example of their speed, compare with kayaking records that have been on this route in 24 hours.
The forecast says the weather will be fine. Wind from south-west. Wave height 2 meeters. The 19 ton cruiser "Hamachidori" will accompany them as their escort ship. Two of TV staff be onborad the Hamachidori and will return to Amami-Ohshima next day. That ship will spend 90 minutes to return.
On our voyage so far, our pace is to row the boat a hour then take rest 5 minutes regularly. Depending on the sea, we either take a rest together or switch. Our average speed is 6 km/hour (3.75 mph or 3.4 knots). We think it is faster pace. The waves are high, sometimes 4 to 5 meters high (15½ feet)! We eat bananas, bread and rice cakes (onigiri) for lunch.
