June 30, 1999 From Tokara, to Kodakara.

At 8:10 AM today, Kohno telephoned the Expedition Office, "We are leaving Tokara, rowing toward Kodakara Island.".

At 10:59 AM , they phoned the Expedition Office again having just arrived at Kodakara. "We arrived at 10:40.  Today was not as hard, with waves about 1.5 meters high.  It is cloudy with a southwest wind. We both are in the best of health. When we arrived, the public officials welcomed us. We will head toward Akuseki Island tomorrow."

Today's official data

Left Tokara Island June 30, 1999 8:03 AM.
Arrived Kodakara Island June 30, 1999 10:40 AM
Distance  about 15 kilometers

At 8:10 PM, Kohno called the office the second time to say, "The current approaching Kodakara Island was fast. Our combination paddling was very effective. After arriving, we made a trip around the island. This island is surrounded by a coral reef. We were going to try the hot [salt water] spa but decided not to since the day was already so hot."

Kohno says the population of the island is 39 including 4 elementary and Junior High students - 3 brothers and the principal's child. We received an invitation to dinner from the local residents.  The sashimi, boiled fish and  bamboo shoots were so good. It was raining outside. The wave height was 2 meters.

"We used the "Uotcher", a small underwater video cam yesterday. It was supplied as a sample by Panasonic. The underwater views were so great."
(Editor: we are sorry we can't show them here yet. The camera's name "Uotcher" is a pun formed from the Japanese word "Uo" (fish) to sound like the "w" in "watch."  The camera is designed specifically for detecting fish underwater.  When a fisherman has no catch, he can switch from baited hook to the "Uotcher" so he can verify if there are fish nearby or not.   There are many more uses for seeing underwater without having to dive in.  It will available to the market July 20, 1999.)

They are scheduled to leave Kodakara at 8:00 AM, July 1, 1999.  Their next stop is Akuseki Island.   The distance between Akuseki Island and Kodakara Island is about 35 kilometers.
